Gabbriette and Betsey Johson, two generations of fashion main characters, teamed up and co-hosted the campiest, goth punkiest, pink princess tea party imaginable at The House on Sunset in West Hollywood on January 17. The Luv Urself tea party was a celebration of the designer’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. In our faces were lace, taffeta, bows, and a love affair between black and pink. The staff at the party had on black sunglasses and Marie Antoinette wigs. If your favorite stars weren’t there, their favorite stars definitely were.

The party was a celebration of fashion, but also of queer nightlife. Attendees included New York City nightlife legend Amanda Lepore, as well as performances by drag stars like Gottmik, Naomi Smalls, and Jaida Essence Hall. There was also a DJ set by drag sweetheart Aquaria.

Accompanying Gabbriette was her new boyfriend Matty Healy, the lead singer of The 1975 and the Internet’s favorite resident dirtbag. Despite keeping a relatively low profile during time off between the band’s North American and UK tours, he seems to be showing up wherever she is. During New York Fashion Week in September, Matty and Gabbriette attended a calendar of events together, including Gabbriette’s own Cash App party, which she cohosted and designed the menu for.

Other attendees included Euphoria actress Chloe Cherry, as well as Amanda Steele, Jesse Jo Stark, Drew Afualo, Gigi Gorgeous, and more.

Both Gabbriette and Chloe Cherry dressed in vintage Betsey, a celebration of the designer’s decades-long legacy-making clothes with a singular and timeless point of view. Gabbriette wore a satin black strapless gown with a corset bodice and pleated ruffles at the hem. Chloe Cherry wore a pastel yellow satin mini halter dress with a big bow across the chest, a ruched bodice, and yellow and white lace ruffles all down the skirt. And despite what the Ins-and-Outs lists on TikTok and Twitter insisted at the start of 2024, this party with the popular kids proves that bows are definitely not going anywhere anytime soon.

Betsey Johnson, now 81 years old, has made a career of turning bows, lace, and traditional motifs into something edgy and subversive. Her vintage has always had an eager audience. (Google Betsey Johnson fruit dress if you dare.) But with the rise of coquette styles on TikTok and the popularity of designers like Sandy Liang, Simone Rocha, and SHUSHU/TONG, the design sensibility that Betsey Johnson was responsible for skyrocketing, especially in the 2000s, is back and in the hands of a new generation. Betsey Johnson knows what a big deal she is in the vintage community, which is why she offers resale from her own website as well.

And if you’re trying to recreate the essence of Betsey with what you have in your closet, here’s my advice: The key to nailing a Betsey look, I think, is to understand that overdoing it is the point. It’s about having fun and being obsessed with your clothes before wondering what others might think. Betsey Johnson became iconic because she was doing what no one else was. The thing that makes a look singular is chaos and discovery, which you probably won’t find on an Ins-and-Outs list anyway.
